Accreditation Assessment Team Seeks Public Comment

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®), will arrive on December 11, 2017, to examine all aspects of the Speedway Police Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations and support services, Chief James Campbell announced today. Verification by the team that Speedway Police meets the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation—a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence, he said.

As part of the assessment, agency personnel and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Monday, December 11th, at 5:30pm. The session will be conducted at the Town Hall Meeting Room, located at 1450 N. Lynhurst Drive, Speedway, Indiana. If for some reason an individual cannot speak at the public information session but would still like to provide comments to the assessment team, he/she may do so by telephone. The public may call 317-246-4326 on December 11th, between the hours of 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm. Persons wishing to offer written comments about the Speedway Police Department’s ability to meet the standards for accreditation are requested to write:

The Speedway Police Department has to comply with nearly 200 standards in order to remain in accredited status, Chief James Campbell said. “Over the past three years, Speedway Police Department has reviewed and prepared Department policies and practices in an effort to maintain accreditation from CALEA. This has been a journey that will hopefully result in national recognition of best practices and policy in professional law enforcement. The Department has worked diligently to once again achieve this goal. The Department and the Community will be well served by this effort. I am truly proud of SPD for accepting this challenge.”

Accreditation is for three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited. This accreditation cycle will examine the practices of the Speedway Police Department for 2015, 2016, and 2017, to date.
